Arapaho National Recreation Area

The ANRA or Arapaho National Recreation Area is situated along Colorado River’s headwaters. This would be on the north central portion of Colorado and adjacent to the famous Rocky Mountain National Park. The acclaimed Continental Divide National Scenic Trail also passes through the park. Thus, ANRA falls under the strict jurisdiction of what is now known as the Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest.

Along the upper portion if the Colorado River Valley, there are 5 lakes found in the ANRA. This would include the following:

  • Shadow Mountain Lake
  • Lake Granby
  • Willow Creek Reservoir
  • Meadow Creek Reservoir
  • Monarch Lake
Hence, there is also a 6th lake being added to the list. This would be the Grand Lake which borders this popular recreation area along its northern portion. Moreover, Grand Lake ranks as Colorado’s largest natural lake. All in all, these 6 lakes make up the “Great Lakes of Colorado”.

With regards to the fees, they charge a recreation fee amounting to $5 each day for each vehicle. They also have packages where in you can stay there for 3 days for only $10, 7 days for only $15. For those who would like to frequent the area, they charge $30 for a so-called annual pass. Hence, these fees can be paid via their pay stations (self-service) along the ANRA. Aside from this, they also have a fee station that operates even during holidays and weekends, by the Arapaho Bay Road. Thus, the Sulphur Ranger District situated in Granby also gives out passes for the campground hosts and for businesses in the local area.
