Aspen

The Aspen Mountain is along the Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, which is also a noted ski area. It is one of the well-loved and frequently visited skiing destinations in Colorado. Although the mountain is not that high, it still looms over Aspen Town due to its closeness to the actual town. Thus, the charming town of Aspen was originally a silver mining camp. This was during the year 1879, following the Colorado Silver Boom.

This is why during the 1880s and 1890s, the historic mountain flank became the site for an intense and systematic mining activity.
This would be along the surface and even below the mountain. It was only during the middle part of the 20th century that the site was converted to a recreational site for downhill skiing.

Thus, it was on the year 1946 when a Walter Paepcke of the Aspen Skiing Company built the 1st chairlift above the mountain and opened the famous ski area. After some time, the chairlift was shifted to a more gondola lift. This actually starts in Aspen’s downtown and ascends from the central portion of the town. Thus, Aspen Mountain is also regarded as “Ajax” by Aspen’s locals.
