Thus, Denver residents are able to practice their skiing and snowboarding at Winter Park every year. You can get there via their Ski Train; which will take you to Winter Park’s base through the renowned Moffatt Tunnel.
The Winter Park Resort also comprises of 3 mountain peaks that are somehow interconnected. This would be the Mary Jane, Vasquez Ridge and Winter Park itself. They even share the same lift ticket. The Mary Jane Mountain Peak was opened last 1975. Its base area is separated and more known because of its tree skiing, moguls, hidden nuts and a very difficult terrain. It even encompasses the Parsenn Bowl’s tree-lined terrain.
Vasquez Ridge, on the other hand, was opened last 1986. They offer a more intermediate mogul run and terrain. During the year 1997, Vasquez Cirque opened around 435 acres of their backcountry terrain for skiing. This was amidst the fact, at that time, which you would need to hike onto the Mary Jane top area; just to be able to access this. This was changed when a relocation of the Outrigger triple direct chairlift was done last 2006 to provide lift access from the Cirque to the terrain.
Hence, ever since Intrawest took over the resort they made a lot of changes to the actual mountain’s infrastructure. They even went as far as renovating the actual food services rendered by the magnificent base lodge of West Portal. During the year 2005 and the year 2006, they opened new lifts and announced their future plans to set up a base village that would include a parking structure and hundreds of condominiums. They also broadcasted the construction of a family swim center and a “Village Pond”. Thus, all these would be accessible via “The Cabriolet” or the newly built open-air gondola.
However, amidst the fact that these changes are good for the resort and town’s economic development, it also poses a threat on the existing historical resort base. A good example would be the Balcony House. This is a historical Building that was designed with a Googie architectural style; which was a very popular style during the 1940s up to the 1960s. It is remarkable because amidst being under threats of demolition, they remain standing and attuned to the numerous historical events of Winter Park.
There was even an attempt to make this area a year-round resort facility. This is why Intrawest also operates their lifts during the actual summer months. Mountain Biking, the Alpine Slide, climbing walls and miniature golf are just some of the features they can provide during the summer season. Although golf cannot be accommodated at the resort itself, there are nearby areas where you can play golf in.
